Daegu Sangwon Go and Saeadang reach the Bonghwangdae final.

In the semifinals of the 51st National High School Baseball Tournament (co-hosted by The Korea Times and the Korea Baseball and Softball Association) held at Mokdong Stadium in Seoul, South Korea, on June 6, SE ADVERTISING came from behind to beat powerhouse Daegu Sangwon High School 5-4 in extra innings. In particular, SeAd’s run to the finals has a special meaning. Aside from reaching the national finals for the first time in three years after finishing runner-up at the 2020 E-Mart Varsity, the last time they reached the final four was at the 2003 Phoenix Games, meaning that it was the first time in their history that they reached the final four of the same tournament after reaching the quarterfinals of the Phoenix Games in 20 years.

It was literally an upset win for SeAd. After taking an early 2-0 lead, Daegu Sangwon Go scored a run in the seventh and eighth innings to tie the game, and when Daegu Sangwon Go’s Kang Tae-won hit a two-run single in the 10th inning, it looked like the game was over.

In their final at-bat in the bottom of the 10th, however, Segwang tied the game again with a Kim Ji-min RBI single and Lee Sang-mook’s sacrifice fly to center field, then scored the game-winning run when Jeon Min-jae hit an infield single to second base with the bases loaded to end the game. It was a 5-4 comeback win for Segwang.

On the mound, ace Kim Yeon-ju shined. Segwang’s ace Kim Yeon-ju pitched six innings of four-hit, two-run (unearned) ball to earn the semifinal victory.

Daegu Go advanced to the final of the phoenix tournament with a 13-5 victory over Gyeongdong Go. The 13 runs scored on 14 hits and 14 walks were crucial. However, it was disappointing that Daegu Go’s mound also allowed 10 wild pitches, marking the second consecutive day of 20+ wild pitches.

Both teams, Daegu Go and Seadoo, will take a two-day break and play the final game on Saturday, September 9 for the weekend.
