“Cameraman Pete Standell, who was hit by the ball, has been diagnosed with an orbital fracture and is resting with his family,” ESPN reported on Sunday.
Stendell, a cameraman for the New York Yankees’ exclusive YES network, went down after being hit by a pitch from Baltimore shortstop Gunner Henderson during the Yankees’ game against the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium in New York City on June 6.
He was filming the game from the dugout on the first base side when Henderson’s hard throw to complete a double play at first base in the bottom of the fifth inning flew into his face.
As he was carried off in a pickup truck-like ambulance, Stendell drew a “V” sign from players and spectators, which drew much applause. The game was stopped for about 17 minutes.
Henderson, the Baltimore shortstop who injured the cameraman with his gesture, said, “I pray for Stanton. I’m thankful for the people who came out to help him.”
Yankees manager Aaron Boone, who watched from the sidelines as Stendell was hit by the errant pitch, said, “I was surprised to see that in real time. I’m glad to hear he’s recovering at home.” Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde also recalled the dizzying scene, calling it “terrifying and horrifying.”
Stendell’s company, Yes Network, released a statement saying, “Stendell and his family are grateful for everyone’s support.”
