He decided enough was enough, and when the pitcher grounded out, he motioned for the first baseman to move out of the way and took the base himself. “It wasn’t the kind of baseball you want to see from a team that’s trying to win a championship,” he said after the game.

Bauer took the mound against the Junichi Dragons at Yokohama Stadium in Yokohama, Japan, on 1 January, allowing two runs on 10 hits in six innings. The problem was what happened next.

Yuki Okabayashi’s grounder to the second baseman did not result in an out. National second baseman Shugo Maki initiated a rundown play, which ultimately failed to catch any runners. The catcher and third baseman also made poor judgements.

Ryoku, who started at first base, took third base and then went back to second, but was not restricted by the empty second base. Yuta Ishibashi, who started at second base, was caught between third and home and safely made it to third. Bauer looked on in disbelief.

With two outs, Shuhei Takahashi hit a grounder to Bauer. Bauer gestured to first baseman Neftali Soto to move out of the way, and then stepped on the first base line. The play ended in a scoreless tie, but Bauer was frustrated with her teammates’ defence.

The game ended in a 2-2 draw. “That’s not how you play baseball for a team that’s trying to win a championship. You throw to win, and I was angry at myself (for not handling the bunt) and the situation. It wasn’t directed at anybody in particular,” Bauer said.

Still, he was happy that he didn’t lose. “Nobody gave up, we all came together,” Bauer said of her teammates who tied the game in the eighth inning. DeNA is in second place in the Central League with 38 wins, two draws and 30 losses for a .559 winning percentage, 2.0 games behind leader Hanshin.
